09-08-24. Darlington FC Vs Kidderminster Harriers. Match preview

Preview:Phil Lench

Joe Foulkes is back with the Harriers

Our return to the National North league gets underway at Darlington FC tomorrow and hopefully it’ll be the good start that all Harriers fans are hoping for.

We’ve had a pretty decent pre-season with some wins against good sides but, as we found last season, there was a lack of goals when we expected more. That situation has led to a call for a striker but none has appeared. Phil Brown has been trying but has been let down at the last minute as he found with Kurt Willoughby who had agreed to sign but then his old club Chester FC put the tempters out and he signed for them instead.

Now, after another un-named striker turned us down, we look set to sign one today but it’ll be too late for him to play tomorrow. The rumours are it’ll be Ben Beresford from Birmingham City U21’s but we’ll have to wait and see on that.

We do have new faces in other positions though. David Davis, Reece Devine, Paul Downing and the returning permanently Joe Foulkes are all defenders whilst Luke Summerfield in midfield is our replacement for the departed Shane Byrne. Out wide we have Maliq Cadogan and Maz Kouhyar on loan from Swansea City and York City respectively. It’s just the front berth that we have a shortage in with five strikers leaving us and none coming in.

We have also begun to send some squad members out on loan this week, those that need the experience or will probably not feature for the first team so much.  That brings us to Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain who, this morning, has joined Truro City on loan until October. Others out are the young goalkeeper Josh Bishop to Worcester City while U21’s Natty Hewett, Ben Maginness, Daniel Broni-Phillips and first teamer Kobe Hall have gone down the road to Stourport Swifts.

For Darlington they too have been bringing new players in but it’s the one that they signed towards the end of last season that would have interested us the most but Joe Leesley is out injured for at least a month after getting injured while training. Sadly there’s nothing new there then!

So it’s a long, long trip for our first three points of the 2024-25 season. Let’s just hope that is the case and the fans return home happy.
