24-03-23. Match preview Vs Alfreton Town

Preview: Phil Lench

The transfer deadline passed for clubs at our level last night and, as expected, we didn’t get to see a new striker coming in through the door. Not even one to bring on ten minutes from the end in the hope that the ball hits his backside and into the net. It all gives the impression that this club have no real intention of improving our lower midtable position and that we’re content with seeing the season over without any further effort.

Tomorrow we face Alfreton Town at Aggborough and a draw, or a defeat, in that could possibly see the fans staying away in droves. Afterall if the club doesn’t care then why should we? We more or less know that the owner no longer cares and it’s about time that he manned up and told us so.

We’ll be without Nathaniel Knight-Percival who’ll be serving the second game of his four game ban while Joe McGlynn remains the totally forgotten man back in Burnley. Joe Leesley and Alex Penny are back in training and could both make an appearance tomorrow. Alfreton will have Matt Rhead back from his two match ban (bad timing for us there) but don’t appear to have any other injuries.

The game will be filmed for National League TV. Obviously someone didn’t do any research to see if anyone would actually want to pay good money for it.

Last Saturday we again snatched a draw from the jaws of victory when a total cock up in defence allowed Gloucester City to score in the dying seconds of the game. Russ Penn said that he was disappointed that we couldn’t add to our slender eighth minute lead but, frankly, we don’t have any strikers worthy of the name to actually score those goals that he somehow believed that we could have scored.

I don’t know whether this will be a win or a draw for us but I can say, hand firmly on heart, that it’ll include a ‘nil’ from us.
