Harriers come back three times to win at Scarborough

Report: Kidderminster Shuttle

The Harriers returned to the top of National League North after edging a battle at Scarborough to take three points in a 3-2 win. The visitors from Worcestershire twice held the lead in Yorkshire before being pegged back by the hosts, Ashley Hemmings eventually settling the tie with the winning goal, his thirteenth of the season, in the second half.

Following an enforced break from action after the postponement of the previous weekend’s National League North tie at Marine AFC, Harriers travelled to Scarborough making three changes to their starting line-up from the last action, the 4-0 FA Trophy drubbing of Slough Town. Back into the line-up came Amari Morgan-Smith to partner hat-trick hero from that day Ashley Hemmings, while Ryley Reynolds slotted in midfield. Paul Downing was restored to the eleven, too, with Kam Kandola among those dropping out because of injury.

It was a relentless and frustratingly end-to-end first period that saw the Harriers under constant pressure from a lively home side who, with just thirteen minutes gone, hit the woodwork through Kieran Weledji’s close range effort. Two minutes later it was the visitors who were ahead. Reynolds showed real tenacity to snatch the ball from Boro and charge up field with pace before picking out Maz Kouhyar on the counter who controlled the ball well before slotting it into the back of the net with the aid of a post.

Phil Brown will have been livid to see that lead evaporate within thirty seconds of the kick off; Scarborough working the ball into the area for Luca Colville to nod home unmarked from just six yards. Three before the half hour Harriers did manage to re-establish their lead, making it 2-1 as Kouhyar turned provider with a neat ball to the far post that Morgan-Smith tucked home at the second attempt.

A half that yielded almost nothing bar its four goals found itself at 2-2 just seven minutes before the break when Scarborough levelled again through Harry Green’s driven free kick.

HT: 2 – 2

Within ten minutes of the restart there had been a chance at either end for more goals – Ashley Hemmings nodded into the hands of the goalkeeper on forty nine minutes before Dominic Tear angled a drive into the side netting at the other end.

Eight after the hour the Harriers snatched the lead once more with another scorching counter attack. Lively all night, Kouhyar was again involved, deftly laying in Morgan-Smith who swept the ball across the box where the onrushing Hemmings was waiting to power the ball home.

At that stage the visitors finally managed to secure a measure of control on the tie, showing real composure in the face of a further bombardment from the Seadogs who desperately searched for a third equaliser to no avail. In fact, it was Harriers who went closest to extending the score further in seven minutes of added time. Sub Reece Devine crossed into the area where Jim Kellermann took it down superbly, firing an effort off the bar.

Harriers will next be in action on Saturday afternoon, back at Aggborough and the comforts of home surroundings as Warrington Town visit for a 3:00pm kick off.

FT: 2 – 3
