09-01-22 - News - After 27 years it's now time for revenge

The Harriers reward for beating Reading FC in the 3rd round of the FA Cup yesterday is to travel back twenty eight* years to that eventful 1993-94 season when we beat, first Birmingham City then Preston North End, to earn a dream home game against West Ham Utd in the 5th round of that historic trophy. Sadly it was to end in defeat but it was a game, and a season, that have lived long in the memories of the fans and also the players.

It was that famous match winning goal from Jon Purdie in the 3rd round at St Andrews that saw us first set out on that magical cup run and that was followed by a dour struggle of a game at home to Preston and a solitary Delwyn Humphreys goal that took us into the fifth round and that game at home to our illustrious opponents back then, and still now, West Ham Utd.

It was a packed out Aggborough on a dreary February afternoon that welcomed the Londoners. With a thousand fans perched high above the old Cowshed in a temporary stand.

The game was never a sparkling affair and chances for both sides were few and far between. It took a mistake from the Harriers keeper, Kevin Rose, to gift Lee Chapman the only goal of the game but we had done well in reaching that stage of the Cup so there could be no complaints.

We went on to win the Vauxhall Conference title but we were cruelly denied our place in the 3rd Division with the flimsy excuse that Aggborough did not meet the standards required of the Football League, although many existing grounds already being used in the 3rd Division were nowhere near as good as Aggborough. It was at the end of that season that the Main Stand was built that would have made Aggborough good enough.

Now we have an, admittedly slim, chance to gain our revenge when West Ham come to us over the weekend of February 5th/6th for the fourth round game that must surely warrant a main game slot on the TV. How can they miss us out this time?

This West Ham side probably have a few more stars than they did back then. Then they had Chapman, Tim Breaker, Alvin Martin and someone called Mike Marsh. Where did he end up? Now their side contains the likes of Fabianski, Cresswell, Coufal, Fornals, Lanzini, Soucek, Rice, Antonio and someone called Jarrod Bowen who we tried to sign when he was a youngster at Hereford Utd.

There’s no guarantee we’ll see all of those but I’d be happy with Michail Antonio (a player I really respect) and Bowen.

So now we have a month to wait. But I can’t wait….

*OK. I got the years since wrong. I have to be excused in all the excitement and panic.
