FA Cup 4th qualifying round |
Date: 12-10-24 Match preview Vs Guiseley AFC Venue: Aggborough Kick off: 15:00hrs |
Preview:Phil Lench
After getting past Buxton FC in the last round, admittedly following a replay, we now continue our FA Cup journey with the visit of Guiseley AFC to Aggborough tomorrow. We last played Guiseley back in 2022 when they got relegated at the end of that season and went into the Northern Premier League Premier Division where they currently sit in fifth place.
We’ll be without a handful of the team one short term and some long term. Short term Alex Penny is expected to return after missing the Spennymoor Town game last Saturday through a hamstring injury. It does seem a bit soon for such an injury to clear up but we are a bit short of depth in defence.
The long term injured are, apart from Luke Summerfield and his broken leg, Ben Beresford, Paul Downing and George Cooper. Let’s discount the latter because his loan officially ended this week although he must have actually left us when the extent of his injured shoulder was known. Neither us, KHFC, or his parent club Mansfield Town have confirmed anything yet but I’ve now made him a former player.
Beresford is still on his way back from his hamstring injury and is in light training but we still have no clear date when he will return while Downing is out for about the same length of time but, again, we have no idea what is actually wrong with him.
We all know that Luke will be out for a long time but he’s apparently in high spirits and will, hopefully, be in even better spirits now that he’s received his virtual get well soon card from us, the fans. It’s too late to add to it now but you can see it here: https://www.thankbox.com/app/thankbox/h1Me9cGd
Guiseley are not to be taken lightly by us in this cup game. They did something we couldn’t do in their 3rd qualifying round game at home to Scunthorpe Utd. They beat them!
A Jake Lawlor header from a Will Longbottom free kick put them into the hat to play us. Some may remember Longbottom from his time with us back in 2017. He was with Bradford PA for quite a while but left them in July to sign for the Lions. Last Saturday he scored a brace to see off Basford Utd 3-0 in their league game.
Reiss McNally is a former Guiseley player. He signed for them in 2009 after being released, as a youngster, by Solihull Moors. He went on to play thirty five games for them in his only season there before re-signing for Solihull again.
On paper this is a game that should see us into the next round without any problem but in recent weeks we seem to have lost our mojo and struggled. Two weeks ago we lost at home to Alfreton Town and Aggborough was a fortress no longer.
We cannot afford to lose this and we have to be tough at the back, solid in the middle of the park and ruthless up front otherwise the fans will begin to lose faith.
