Date: 25-07-23 Harriers stage a comeback against the Cobblers

The Harriers staged a second half comeback at home to Northampton Town in this latest of our friendly games this evening. Town had gone into an early first half lead when Sam Hoskins fired in on the angle following Akin Odimayo’s cross over the heads of the Harriers defence.

Their second goal some fifteen minutes later came from a superb free kick, taken by Mitch Pinnock, that left Christian Dibble flat footed as the ball curled around him.

We were struggling to create anything of any note and looked bereft of ideas, loose in possession and unable to compete with Northamptons sharpness. Yes, I know it was only a friendly but at this stage of pre-season we should be expecting to see something more from the team.

1st half team: Dibble, Richards, Penny, Knight-Percival, Pearce, Lissimore, Phillips, Leesley, Morgan-Smith, Brown, Byrne.

The team that played the first half also started the second too and, to be honest, it was more of the same. It wasn’t until a trio of subs: Hemmings, Oxlade-Chamberlain and McDonagh came on did we begin to wake up to the fact that the fans were expecting maybe a little more.

The comeback started with a towering header from Krystian Pearce from Joe Leesleys corner that went into the back of the net. Ten minutes later and we were back level when Ash Hemmings curling shot, that took a slight deflection, rounded the Cobblers keeper.

Both sides seem happy with that and, apart from a head injury to Nathaniel Knight-Percival that didn’t look too bad, the game drew to an end.

Saturday is our final friendly away at AFC Telford Utd and it’d be nice to see something a little more promising there.

Subs: Palmer, Bishop, Maginniss, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Preston, Hemmings, Lambert, Hall, McDonagh, Hewett, Freemantle.

Att: 840. From Northampton 82.
