Returning to a team he spent time with

On the back of our opening two games the Harriers will now be travelling to Southport full of confidence. An away win at York City was followed by a resounding home win against Blyth Spartans last Saturday has set us up nicely to continue the run and also, possibly, overturn a well out of date record.

The first two winning games were our first consecutive wins in league football since August 2003 when we beat Mansfield Town 2-1 at home (remember that superb Bo Henriksen goal?) and then won at Darlington Town 2-0 with goals from Danny Williams and Andy Bishop. That game was the famous one when we spoilt their new stadium opening game. Done that somewhere else too if memory serves me correct.

Further back in August 1979 we started our season in the Southern League Midland Division with a 1-0 home against Merthyr Tydfil and then followed that up with an away win at Wellingborough. We were back at Aggborough the following Saturday and put four past some village team from Bromsgrove to give us three opening wins.

Saturday could see that record being replaced by a new one if we can get all three points at Haig Avenue.

We’ll be without Cliff Moyo and Amari Morgan-Smith still but we should have both Keith Lowe and Lewis Montrose back all being well. They both missed the Blyth game through illness and injury. The problem for Keith will be displacing Geraldo Bajrami after he deputised for him magnificently.

Southport will be without midfielder, and Captain, Russ Benjamin after he broke his ankle at Spennymoor Town last Saturday and will now be out for around two months. They have no other known injuries but will now bee looking to improve their poor start to the season following a home draw against Gloucester City and that defeat at Spennymoor last week.

There will also be a linking up with old friends for the Harriers defender Caleb Richards because he spent time on loan with them at the start of his career when he went out on loan from Blackpool.

Now please excuse the earliness of this preview but I’m stuck on a beach in sunny Lyme Regis. Someone’s got to do this I suppose 🙁
