24-11-18 - Report - Kidderminster Harriers 1 York City 3

Harriers 4th home defeat running

Report: Harriershane

To paraphrase the well known expression “same stuff, different day”, it was a case of “same stuff, different competition” as Harriers crashed out of the FA Trophy in front of one of the lowest crowds of the decade. Jimmy O’Connor missed out through injury, replaced by Ryan Johnson whilst Kane Richards was handed a start instead of Declan Weeks.

Inside the first minute we saw the first goal. Ryan Johnson was unable to get the ball out of his feet and scooped an attempted clearance straight to the York winger who drove to the byeline and squared for Jordan Burrow to tap home from all of two yards out.

For the brave/foolhardy (delete as applicable) fans, an acceptance appeared to sweep over them. Can you blame them with Johnson continuing to look shaky as the visitors targeted him.

Alex Bray and Adriano Moké both tested Brandon Hall before the second goal went in. A carbon copy of the first goal; Alex Bray drove to the byeline in behind Lee Vaughan and squared to Lewis Hawkins who accepted his gift joyfully.

This seemed to actually wake the Harriers up with Dan Bradley and Ed Williams seeing shots go wide or dealt with comfortably by Adam Bartlett. The biggest disappointment though was the inability of both Ashley Chambers and Williams to finish off a chance just before the end of the half when they had just Bartlett to beat, and no defender within reach, but fumbled the chance between them.

HT: 0 – 2

The second half opened with a Billy Daniels effort which was saved easily by Bartlett. Harriers, attacking the North Stand, had pride to play for but risked the further ire of the supporters when Fraser Horsfall tripped Bray in the area; Burrow dispatching the penalty with ease.

The reaction to this goal could be seen as positive though as the Harriers finally established a foothold in the game. Sam Austin was getting quite some joy down the left flank and the Harriers goal was of his making; his shot saved by Bartlett but the rebound was turned home with venom by Lee Vaughan. Vaughan had been handed his fifth yellow card earlier in the game and will now miss the trip to Spennymoor next Saturday.

The Reds continued to push searching for another goal to halve the deficit and were handed a wonderful opportunity when Kane Richards was bodychecked in the box. The resulting penalty was weak from Ed Williams and Bartlett saved comfortably.

All in all it’s another disappointing defeat for Harriers making it four games lost at Aggborough in recent weeks. With Spennymoor putting eight, yes eight, past Halesowen in their Trophy fixture, the defence will need to be on point for what already would have been a tough game.

FT: 1 – 3
