Harriers fail miserably at home yet again
Report: Phil Lench
Again, for what seems the umpteenth time this season, the Harriers failed to win at home and failed to score at home. The below 2000 attendance must be ringing alarm bells somewhere in the corridors of power where promotion was to be the aim this season. That’s now looking very unlikely as the fans trooped out of the stadium thinking that was more of a defeat than a point won.
Marine AFC, second from bottom in the table and only four goals scored so far, should have been meat and drink to our full time professionals but very few of them stepped up to the plate and try to win the game. High marks to Joe Foulkes and Christian Dibble for trying hard but sadly less than five apiece for the rest of the team.
Again there was no start for Alex Penny following the revelation that he cannot travel due to a back problem and now it looks like Phil Brown has put his foot down and said he can’t pick and choose his games either. The rumour is he’ll be sent out on loan in the near future and his contract ended in the New Year.
Reece Devine kept his place in the side following his excellent showing at Needham Market on Saturday (see, we can win games when we try) but he was rarely used as support for the exhausted Joe Foulkes and this time he was subbed in the second half.
It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game when Owen Robinson’s free kick was pushed over the bar by Dibble. From the corner they had another chance to score but this time Joe Mattock headed the ball well wide.
We didn’t seem able to respond in a positive fashion and our midfield seemed content to pass the ball around in midfield, spot the odd foray by Amari Morgan-Smith and Ashley Hemmings into the area then ignore that and continue to pass it between themselves. God how we miss the injured Luke Summerfield?
It wasn’t until the end of the half drew near that we began to come alive. Corner after corner materialised but, again, we just didn’t know what to do with them. Barely one single one of them actually reached a player in a position to score from them. The only one was when Hemmings got his head to one but it was aimed back across the goal and wasted.
A late chance came the way of Caleb Richards but his shot was deflected away after the keeper, Matthew Corran, was well beaten. Corran was called into action once again in injury time as AMS headed over and Hemmings forced him to save at the foot of the post.
HT: 0 – 0
The second half started with Devine not coming back out of the dressing room. Maz Kouhyar took his place and it made you wonder if Devine had suffered a lack of supply why would it be any different for Maz? The answer was no!
We still struggled to make any headway against a resolute Marine and they came close to turning in a shock result when Finlay Sinclair-Smith broke away from our defenders and closed in on Dibble. He looked odds on to score but at the last second his confidence deserted him and he fumbled the chance into the arms of the grounded Dibble.
We hit the bar twice (they hit it once) but yet again failed to create a single clear chance to score. Zak Brown fired over when well placed to score while Jack Lambert had the best chance of our evening but he fired his shot straight at Corran.
We dropped a place down to tenth again when we could have gone up to sixth if we had won. At least we seem to play better away from home and, with a visit to Peterborough Sports on Saturday, hopefully we’ll get something like a better result there.
