Slowly getting us back to looking like a football team

With the Harriers in fourth place in the current form table tomorrow seems a good time to take on Leamington FC at the New Windmill Ground. Our upturn in form has coincided with the appointment of Russ Penn as manager. We have only lost once in the six game spell and, of course, that came at home to York City two weekends ago.

Last Saturday we came back from a goal down to beat Southport up in Lancashire. We quickly responded to David Morgans goal within five minutes when Keith Lowe nodded home from Rhys Williams long throw in. In the second half Ashley Hemmings clinched all three points with a strike from range and added in a back flip for good measure. Now we have to take that form and that win to the other side of the M40.

The Brakes were our guest at Aggborough on the opening day of the season and that game ended disappointingly in a 2-2 draw after the took an half time lead with a penalty from Josh March. He had been targeted to sign for us but opted instead to join Forest Green Rovers for a substantial fee. We were in cloud cuckoo land back then. Second half goals from Ashley Chambers and Ed Williams gave us hope but only until four minutes from time when Kai Anderson gave his team a share of the points.

We signed a new player earlier this week when Jim Kellermann finally put pen to paper following a ‘short’ five month trial period. He had been mainly getting his fitness back after a shoulder injury and now that he’s been given the all clear he wants to get back playing for his hometown club.

Now that Declan Weeks is back from his long term injury we have just Samir Nabi sidelined but he shouldn’t be too long out now. Declan came on in the second half at Southport and it looked as if he’d never been away.

Leamington will have to do without their captain, Jack Edwards, due to suspension while Connor Gudger is out long term with an ACL injury. There are still quite a few ex Harriers at the Windmill with Joe Clarke, Callum Gittings and Jake Weaver there. Our own Milan Butterfield and Sam Austin have both played for Leamington in the past.

Following Herefords point at Kettering Town in the week we slipped down a place to sixteenth in the table. A win at Leamington should see us go back above them especially as they have to travel up to Spennymoor Town the same day. Those three points could take us up to thirteenth place and that would be an excellent reward for all the hard work that Russ has done to get us looking like a football team once again.
