Harriers win on the road once again
Report: Phil Lench
Our form on the road continued at odds with our home form with a 1-0 win at Curzon Ashton. At home we can’t get a win for love or money but it’s a different matter on our travels with the Reds undefeated in our last five away games.
Tonights game was a close affair but an early goal from Ashley Hemmings was enough to clinch the points against a side that had played, and lost 4-0, against League One high flyers Mansfield Town in the FA Cup in Sunday.
With Joe Foulkes back in the side following his one game suspension and Ben Beresford on the bench following his long term injury, the game started off as a scrappy affair with the Nash probably shading it with a couple of shoots that went wide of the mark. That changed when, in our first real attack, Reece Devine got to the byeline and put over a lovely ball onto the head of Hemmings and into the net via the upright.
We came alive after the goal and David Davis had a rising shot over the bar. Curzon had their chances too with James Spencer and Isaac Sinclair both firing wide.
HT: 0 – 1
The second half went more in the hosts favour with them getting to see more of the ball and looking the more likely to score again. That was something we didn’t want and would rather a second goal that would have taken us a place higher in the table. We had already gone from eleventh to sixth and up to fifth would have been brilliant.
The referee had already been busy booking players in the first half and decided to increase his tally in this half with six more going in the book including Phil Brown who, stupidly, got booked for rolling a dead ball back onto the pitch after a throw in had already been taken with a new ball. Some of the bookings were unnecessary for both sides including one for Davis who he had deemed to kick the ball away even though it was a pass to a team mate.
We had a shout for a penalty turned down when Amari Morgan-Smith was upended in the area but it did look a little suspect. Foulkes collected the loose ball and fired over the bar.
With Curzon now controlling more of the game they began to pepper Christian Dibbles goal with shots. None of them troubling Dibble too much though although Spencer did try but his shot was easily collected, Adam Bartons header hit the bar and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts fired narrowly over the bar. All three left Harriers fans worrying but there was no need to worry as we saw the game out safely.
Apart from the three points another bonus was the return of Ben Beresford after his injury. He came on as a late sub for AMS and, although he didn’t get a chance to do much, he got a taste for playing again after three months out.
We now have a quick turnaround before we face Farsley Celtic at Aggborough on Saturday. Will this be the game we get our home form back to being something like?
