02-10-20 - Preview - FA Cup 2nd Qual Rd - Alvechurch Vs Kidderminster Harriers

back with the Harriers

In a strange twist to these troubled times the Harriers mark their official start to the 2020-21 season with an FA Cup game at Alvechurch. Normally we would have played around ten or eleven games before reaching this stage but instead we have to kick off our season with the start of a cup campaign on the back of a smattering of friendly games.

The fans, too, would have been following the Reds around the country and at Aggborough but not this season sadly. Instead we’re going to have to rely on the media to keep us informed of what is happening at Lye Meadow. We just have to hope that the club will be streaming the game.

We played Alvechurch only recently in the aforementioned friendlies and ran out 4-1 winners with a brace from Amari Morgan-Smith and one each from Ashley Hemmings and Omari Sterling-James. The first and last of those are both new signings even though AMS was with us before many moons ago, returning here in June, while OSJ signed for us in August following his release from Mansfield Town.

Other new signings for us include Koby Arthur, Caleb Richards, Luke Maxwell, Keziah Martin, Lewis Montrose and to a lesser extent Jim Kellermann. He actually signed for us last season but never got to play due to the COVID lockdown coming into effect before he had the chance.

We are still a little short of bodies in certain areas but there are strong rumours that defender Max Taylor has signed for us on loan from Manchester Utd. That would be quite a coup for us to follow up the signing of Caleb Richards on loan from Norwich City and, last season, Rhys Williams from Liverpool. Congratulations go to Rhys following his second appearance in their first team last night against Arsenal in the EFL Trophy.

We still need a keeper and the other rumour is that it could be the former York City keeper Luke Simpson who was released from Barrow last season.

With no real current form to delve into this is going to be a learning process for the Harriers but Alvechurch do have the advantage of already having played four meaningful games. They haven’t been doing too well though with heavy defeats away at Hitchin Town (5-1) and at home to Stratford Town (1-3). In between they won 2-0 at Shifnal Town in the previous round of the FA Cup and then their only league point so far came at home to Royston Town (2-2).

They have just two ex Harriers playing for them with Jono Brown in goal and from further back in time Joe Hull who was with us back in 2009.

I fully expect us to come back from Lye Meadow with the win needed to send us into the next round of the FA Cup. Please don’t let us down so early in this topsy-turvy season.
