Gateshead have announced one-year contract extensions for four players.

Greg Olley, Alex Nicholson, Jordan Preston and Sam Guthrie have all committed their futures to the club.

The quartet were part of the Heed squad that were within two points of the National League North play-off places, with games in hand on the seven sides above them prior to the season suspension in March.

The extensions are subject to FA clearance.
Challoner made 90 appearances for the Port between 2013 and 2016 before moving to Chorley, where he won promotion to the Vanarama National League 12 months ago.

The 26-year-old becomes Southport’s second signing of the week, after the addition of former Chorley teammate Marcus Carver.

Manager Liam Watson said: “It’s great to have Matt on board for next season. He has got valuable experience in this division and at the level above and has really developed as a player during the last few years.”

Farsley Celtic have agreed a deal to sign Stafford Rangers forward Jake Charles.

The ex-Wales Under-21 international, who is the grandson of the late Leeds United legend John Charles, scored 27 goals in 71 games for Stafford, who have said the following about his move up to the National League North:

“With the club being a few miles from Jake’s Leeds home and being a division higher, the decision was quite a draw, especially in the current climate. Although Jake’s contract with Rangers had expired, Farsley had the decency to approach us for permission to speak with Jake, so we thank them for their conduct over the matter and we wish Jake the very best for the future and thank him for his service.

“27 goals in 71 appearances made Jake a favourite with many fans. All the best, Jake!”

Luke Parkin will remain with Farsley Celtic next season after exercising an option in his contract.

Parkin, who joined from Brighouse Town in 2017, was an integral part of the squad that won the Northern Premier League and has made 136 appearances across his three seasons with the club, scoring 17 goals.

The 24-year-old is looking forward to spending another season at the Citadel, as he said: “I have been here for three years and loved every minute to be honest.

“I’m sure you have heard it from many of the lads but the dressing room is unbelievable, and that’s what has been so good for three years.”

Gloucester City goalkeeper Niall Maher has committed to the club for the upcoming season.

Since joining City from Weston-super-Mare in December 2019, the young goalkeeper has made 11 appearances and has gained many plaudits for his performances.

On signing for the upcoming season, Maher had the following to say:

“I am delighted to have signed a new contract at the club and I’m looking forward to getting back in and working. I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far and the fans have been great to me.”

Isaac Marriott has agreed a pre-contract deal to join Bradford (Park Avenue) for next season.

Marriott will join when his current deal with Huddersfield Town expires. The midfielder has been part of the Huddersfield set-up since he was nine years old.

He now joins Bradford on a permanent basis after his loan spell with the club last season.

Marriott told the club’s website: “I’m thrilled to be joining BPA from next season. A massive part of my decision was the chance to work again under Mark and his assistant Danny, and I was also inspired by the ambitious plans the club have moving forward.

“I also felt that during my loan spell, the fans took a liking to me, which is a big factor in me joining. They’re a great set of fans and I can’t wait to get started.”

King’s Lynn Town say they have offered new deals to Adam Marriott and Ryan Jarvis.

The National League North high-flyers have announced their retained list, with Ryan Fryatt and Nathan Fox the players to be released.

Former Norwich City and Leyton Orient forward Jarvis and the league’s leading scorer Marriott have been offered contract extensions, though the Linnets have yet to agree terms with either player.

The following are currently signed up for next season:

Alex Street
Alex Brown
Ross Barrows
Michael Clunan
Michael Gash
Chris Henderson
Sam Kelly
Rory McAuley
Tom Ward
Dayle Southwell
Luke Johnson
Sonny Carey
Ryan Hawkins
Aaron Jones
Jordan Richards

JJ O’Donnell, Danny Greenfield and Ruairí Keating have agreed one-year contracts to remain at Gateshead.

The trio join Alex Nicholson, Greg Olley, Jordan Preston and Sam Guthrie in re-signing for the club for the upcoming campaign.

O’Donnell will mark his seventh season at the International Stadium, netting a career-high of eight goals last season to take him to ten in 100 appearances.

Greenfield made three appearances after signing in the summer of 2019, while gaining experience on loan with both West Auckland Town and Ossett United.

Keating, meanwhile, has re-joined after a brief period on Tyneside last season, making six appearances and scoring twice after signing from Torquay United in January 2020.

Gateshead have announced the signing of George Smith.

The recent Harrogate Town player joins on a one-year contract and it marks a return to the Tynesiders for the 23-year-old.

Smith played 38 times for the Heed after joining in 2016, scoring once as they finished 8th in the National League. It earned him a move to Northampton Town in League One.

More recently turning out for Chesterfield, Dover Athletic (loan) and Boston United (loan) before his move to Harrogate, Smith said of his Gateshead switch: “I’ve signed for the up-and-coming season at Gateshead and it’s one I am really looking forward to.

“After speaking to Mike (Williamson) and Ian (Watson) about the plans they have got in place for this season, the direction that the club is going, and not to mention having one of the best years of football up at Gateshead, it’s one I couldn’t really turn down.

“So, I am really looking forward to it. This season is going to be a big season and I can’t wait to get back playing in front of the Heed faithful.”
Bradford (Park Avenue) have confirmed the signing of Jake Hibbs on a one-year deal.

Hibbs joins Mark Bower’s side on a longer-term basis with the option for a second year.

Bower said: “We are delighted to secure the signing of Jake Hibbs on a permanent basis following his loan spell with us.

“Jake put in some strong performances for us last season and we are looking forward to helping him push on and fulfil his undoubted potential.”

Liam Watson has completed his third Southport signing of the summer with the addition of defender Mo Ali.

Ali joins Southport after two seasons in the Vanarama National League North with Curzon Ashton, establishing himself as an accomplished performer at that level.

Born in Zeist in the Netherlands, the 25-year-old has been capped seven times by Somalia, being named Man of the Match in the nation’s first-ever World Cup qualifying win, against Zimbabwe in September.

Ali moved to the UK in 2013, having learned his trade at Alphense Boys, making his first-team debut in the third level of Dutch football at 18, before also representing ADO Den Haag.

His first club in English football was Northwich Victoria, before going on to play for Mossley and Droylsden. A successful two years with Curzon ended by collecting the Supporters’ Player of the Year award earlier this month.

'Big name' Kwame Thomas released by Burton having never played a game for them.

Didn't realise we had a superstar on our books a few seasons ago.

Blyth Spartans say they have taken the decision to discontinue the reserve team next season and resign their membership of the Northern Alliance Football League.

The club explain: “A reserve team can provide a vehicle for players to step up to the first team or it can provide an avenue for first-team players who are recovering from injury and need game time as part of their rehabilitation. It also gives players not selected for the first team squad an opportunity to retain match fitness.

“The potential benefits need to be offset against the cost of running the team, and in the current financial climate, the costs did not justify the return on the investment.”

Spennymoor Town have landed their third new addition of the summer, securing the services of former Chorley left-back Adam Blakeman.

Blakeman told the club’s website: “After speaking with the manager and a few others at the club, and being shown around, I knew this was the place for me to come and play.

“Spennymoor is a club that is moving in the right direction both on and off the pitch and I’m delighted to be a part of it.

“I’ve had some good battles with Spennymoor over the last few years and I know how good they can be, so I’m looking forward to being on the other side of that.

“I can’t wait to get going and see what next season brings.”

The club are delighted to announce Steve Cunningham as our new first team manager for the forthcoming season, having parted ways with Mark Bradshaw.

Cunningham will be joined at the Tameside Stadium by his assistant manager, Damien Crossley.

Steve most recently spent six years in charge of Colne FC prior to resigning from the role in April 2020 in search of a new challenge.

Speaking following his appointment, Cunningham said: "This is the toughest job in the National League North but I could not turn down the opportunity to manage this great, family club.

"Damien and I are really looking forward to catching up with the players, staff, volunteers and the club’s supporters and getting stuck straight in."

We wish Steve all the best for his time with us and hope this leads to a long and successful tenure.
