The Striker debate.

Post by garthrockett » Mon Aug 15, 2022 3:11 pm

AMS's record for last 8 years:
2013–2014 Kidderminster Harriers 37 games, 9 goals
2014–2015 Oldham Athletic 13 (2)
2015–2017 Cheltenham T. 44 (5)
2017–2018 York City 46 (8)
2018–2019 Telford 50 (11)
2019–2020 Alfreton T 16 (12)
2020– 2022 Kidd Harriers 52 (18)
65 goals in 256 games.

Ethan Freemantle
2020-2022 Kidd Harriers 20(+20 as sub), 7 goals.

Two main strikers scoring around 1 every 4 games.
Contrast Ashley Hemmings with 1 in 3; 85 games, 29 goals.

Suggests we are really overly reliant our ageing/injured main striker to have yet another personal best goal season, and m/f to chip in at least 10 each?

For me we need another in, no club has just two strikers on their books.
I like Fremantle, air of Diego Costa about him but to aid his development he could do with a loan spell until Jan (with us to insert a recall clause)
Ams was brilliant last season though his age he won’t play 40 odd game.

For me there is no debate. I know RP is relying on plenty of goals from midfield, but currently we are creating plenty of chances but have been profligate in front of goal.
A target man with height and strength would be my preference.
We have the pace of Ceesay to run of him and the trickery of Hemmings too.
It would also enable us to play a more direct game if required.
I too like the energy of Freemantle, His work rate is exceptional as is Amari's but a third front man is a must for me.

I get and understand all the points made by everyone. But can we change the direction of this debate a little. Who is available worth considering? Would they be better than what we have got? Can we afford another player? Anyone got any inside info of where RP might be looking, if he is? In one of his previous interviews RP did mention the offer of a couple of very good loans?

I expect he's trying for a loan. Of course, no point getting someone in if not good enough. Surely he can't be satisfied with the current options. Will probably will win five nil later with all goals coming from midfield ...

I agreed with this before tonight's match. Now I definitely do!

Who would have guessed that starting without a striker would result in not scoring any goals? :beanshaker2:

Having thought about this and after last night's result, EF looked fit to me and put himself about in the box enough to confirm it !! Took his goal well and looked a threat more so than anyone else, so begs the obvious question - WHY didn't he start? One is left considering the only answer, Russ doesn't believe he's good enough, and prefers to play Cessay, who clearly is not cut out for the role against a packed defence, which then begs the next question WHY not bring in A N Other who IS good enough, after all he's upgraded the rest of the squad but not the strikers. Big few days for Russ to sort this out - things have to change.

Can only think EF is being used sparingly after his injury, also perhaps RP doesn`t think he can do 90 mins for every game with his style, especially with the Tuesday one in between.

If that is the case then all the more reason to get someone in as AMS won't be match fit for weeks, so we don't have a fit striker and will lose ground as a result, clearly the experiment with Cessay hasn't worked and its cost Harriers points.

Thing is there will be players available and cheap at the moment. Wages tend to drop after the season starts. So what's to stop us bringing someone in on a contract until Christmas who isn't signed up anywhere else?
The best team we ever had- since i've been watching the Harriers (2002-)
