23-12-17 - Preview - Harriers Vs Nuneaton Town

We kick off the festive period with a home game against struggling Nuneaton Town tomorrow and we are all hoping for an early Christmas gift of three points with all the trimmings. With Nuneaton struggling just above the bottom place now is no better time to increase our long unbeaten home run that stretches back to almost the start of the season.

Those of us who went to Nuneaton for our first away game of the season will remember only too well the dire performance that was served up to the 200 Harriers fans in attendance. We were slow to every ball and looked totally unfit but at least we were holding out for a draw until two minutes after the ninety when a defensive error let in Ashley Chambers to score and give the home side the three points.

Now, four months on, we look to be a much better and fitter outfit and must be favourites to win this clash.

Our only injury worries are with Dan Bradley, still, with him being out until well into the New Year and also James O’Connor who had a slight groin strain. There was another injured player but Yan Klukowski appears, according to rumour, to have returned to Torquay Utd with a bad groin injury that was picked up in training during the spell of snow that we had recently. Strangely the word from the club was that we were only undergoing light indoor training so how Klukowski came to get a bad injury seems to be a bit of a mystery.

There was another bug in the camp before last Saturdays home game against York City with James McQuilkin starting from the bench as a precaution but when he came on in the second half he didn’t look to have too many problems.

One that will be looking forward to the game is Joe Ironside. He’ll turn out against his former club knowing that he’s on a good scoring run and, although he didn’t net one last week, hoping to continue with another goal or two against them.

Nuneaton have a small number of ex Harriers in their squad but of Kelvin Langmead, Daniel Nti and Dean Lyness it’s only Lyness that seems to be a regular starter for them. Langmead has been out injured since before the start of the season while Nti plays one, misses one. A bit like he was for us then.

Since their manager Tommy Wright left for Darlington a new man has taken over the reigns at the Liberty Way. The much travelled Dino Maamria is now the main man there and he’s been slowly rebuilding the team but without too much success. A steady flow of players have left the club since we last met with the impressive Luke Trotman being the main one after he joined up with his former manager at Darlington.

They’ve lost another two this week after the on loan Darragh Leahy was recalled by his club Coventry City and then promptly released. He promptly returned back home to Ireland to rethink his future. A few hours later came the announcement that another player had gone to Darlington when sixteen year old Mitchell Glover went up there with Wright proclaiming that he was a Premiership quality player in the making due to a slight interest being shown by Leicester City.

So we start this run of games – don’t forget the two games at AFC Telford Utd too – with plenty of confidence in the team and with the fans. Could maximum points tomorrow and against Telford see the Harriers surge higher up the table? I’m sure that Santa is going to be good to us.
